From our CIE Coalition partners at ChessKid.

By Olivia Rosenzweig

Hey ChessKids,

Happy March! We’re gearing up for some great events at ChessKid, especially for all the little Beth Harmons out there. Read on to find out what’s been going on in the ChessKid universe:

ChessKid USA Girls and Women’s Championship!

ChessKid is pleased to announce its first USA online tournament just for female chess players! Individual and team prizes will be awarded to promote and highlight the continued growth of scholastic female chess players in the U.S. Additionally, we are also featuring a women’s section with individual prizes.

There’s even mother-daughter prizes! The event will be US Chess rated and the girls that are brand new to US Chess get a free one-year membership included in their entry!

Here’s the full information and registration page.

Past champions GM Irina Krush, IM Nazi Paikidze, IM Anna Zatonskih, IM Rusa Goletiani, WGM Sabina Foiser, WGM Jennifer Shahade, WGM Jennifer Yu, and WIM Elina Cotler have already offered to be the master teachers for the winners. That’s pretty much every U.S. Women’s Champion from this century!

WGM Jen Shahade will provide commentary during this unique event for girls and women. She will be joined by GM Irina Krush and WGM Jennifer Yu.

Hour of Chess Spring 2021 Recap

Last week was our Spring 2021 edition of Hour of Chess Week! We spent an entire week encouraging chess in schools across the country for an hour a day. 250 schools participated! In addition to that, 95 Hour of Chess Week tournaments were held over the course of the week in the ChessKid Official Club. We are so grateful to each and every one of you that took part in this event with us.

All schools that participated were entered into a raffle, and John Muir Middle School (Burbank, CA) won a ChessKid gold membership for every kid in their school! The school’s participation was facilitated by Coach Kevin Bulone.

We also hosted a photo competition, and three schools won a prize package of 20 gold memberships: Dawson Elementary, Horizon Academy at Marion Oaks, and Rainbow Elementary. You can see all of the entries by searching the hashtag #HourOfChessWeek on social media.

Congrats to all of the winners! We’ll see you again this fall.

Chess in Slums Partners with Chess.com

In September 2020, Chess in Slums partnered with ChessKid.com, the scholastic branch of Chess.com. ChessKid focuses on using chess as an educational tool for classrooms, chess clubs, and parents. Chess In Slums brings chess, resources, and support to impoverished children in the Nigerian slums of Majidun Ikorodu Lagos.

Now, Chess in Slums is partnering with Chess.com too! This partnership combines the CIS-A expertise in community outreach with Chess.com’s world-class chess educational content and reach.

The expanded scope of this new partnership makes ChessKid and Chess.com official content partners in promoting chess as a force for positive social change.
